What is a “release,” and why would you need one?

In this industry, most agents are contracted “downline” from an FMO (Field Marketing Organization) or upline agency. A release is simply the paperwork that lets a carrier reassign your book of business and future writing to a new upline, like Broker’s Broker, without disrupting your license or your clients’ coverage.

You don’t need anyone’s permission to want better commissions, better support, or faster turnaround on hard cases. A release is an administrative step, not a negotiation about whether you’re allowed to grow your business.

Letter of Release

A written request, usually from you and sometimes co-signed by your new upline, asking your current FMO/upline to release your agent-of-record (AOR) status with specific carriers so a new upline can be assigned.

Carrier Re-assignment

The actual change carriers make on their end once a release is processed, updating who you report to for new business, overrides, and (where applicable) renewals.

Common reasons agents request a release

  • Commission levels that don’t reflect production or tenure
  • Slow or inconsistent support on complex cases
  • Outdated or clunky enrollment technology
  • Limited carrier portfolio or product access
  • Wanting a more direct, responsive relationship with an upline
A word of reassurance: Requesting a release is a routine, well-established process in this industry. It does not affect your license, your appointments in good standing, or your ability to serve existing clients during the transition. Most releases are processed in the ordinary course of business between FMOs and carriers.

  • Step 1

Identify your current upline/FMO of record

Confirm exactly who you’re contracted under for each carrier. Sometimes it’s not who you think, especially if you were recruited through a sub-agency. Check a recent commission statement or carrier portal for the FMO name listed as your upline.

  • Step 2

Gather your contract and writing numbers

Pull your agent/writing numbers for each carrier you’re appointed with. You’ll find these on commission statements, carrier portals, or your original contracting paperwork. Having these ready speeds up every step that follows.

  • Step 3

    Request your release in writing

Send a clear, professional release request to your current FMO/upline. Use the letter generator below to create this in minutes. Keep a copy and note the date you sent it.

  • Step 4

    Confirm carrier-level re-assignment

A release request to your upline is one step; each carrier also needs to update its records. Follow up with each carrier (or have your new upline do so) to confirm the re-assignment has been processed on their end.

  • Step 5

    Contract with Broker’s Broker

Once your release is in motion, reach out to Broker’s Broker to start (or finish) your contracting paperwork so there’s no gap in your ability to write new business.

All set: you’ve completed every step. Reach out to Broker’s Broker below to finish contracting before AEP contracting season ramps up.
